Social media usage peaked in 2022 and has plateaued or declined since, particularly among younger generations.

The case

As AI agents become better at making and posting video content, spending will migrate from paid digital advertising to organic content, with the TAM for video editing labor growing from tens of billions to hundreds of billions by next year.

“Our view is that as agents get so good at making and posting video content it actually eats up the amount that's spent on digital advertising. So about $90 billion a year goes towards meta and YouTube and Tik Tok ads and those people are paying for eyeballs. Our view is actually that like a lot of that spending is going to migrate to organic content and it's going to migrate to paying agents for like, you know, the TAM of like video editing software or the labor budgets of video editing software, that's in the tens of billions, but quickly by next year, it'll be in the hundreds of billions in terms of how many people or how many brands are going to spend the amount of money to acquire.”

In 2026, there is a market opportunity for a new social media company to emerge by capitalizing on widespread user dissatisfaction with engagement-maximizing algorithms.

“Here's my prediction in 2026 is that there is a market opportunity for a new social media company to come along because everybody is aware of exactly this problem that you're pointing out.”

The pushback

Chess.com's 2023 growth spike among schoolchildren was driven by short-form content, the Mittens bot, and the cheating scandal.

“Then in 2023, we had another crazy wave where all these kids started playing in schools because of short form content and the mittens bot and the cheating scandal and we just spiked again.”

“The election of '24 was the one where podcasts kind of flipped the you know, it went from being like, I don't know if this matters to like all of a sudden everybody's like, oh wow, this matters.”
