Noah Brier says coordination quality, not model quality, will decide the next round of AI competition

A product thinker's argument: the dangerous failure mode in agentic AI is not buggy code but misaligned systems, and fixing it requires a new coordination layer between humans and agents.

“The most insidious failure mode in agentic engineering isn’t buggy code,” Brier says. “It’s agents building fundamentally misaligned features, products, and systems.” The fix, in his framing, is structural: stronger human oversight baked into how agentic work is organized, not just reviewed after the fact. That shifts the design challenge from catching errors to preventing drift before it compounds across a chain of autonomous steps.

His proposed mechanism for doing that is what he calls “standard status,” described as a new coordination layer to keep humans and agents synchronized, analogous to what standard time did for railroads and commerce. The analogy is speculative and the concept is early-stage, but the underlying claim is worth watching. If coordination quality becomes the scarce resource, the competitive edge shifts away from raw model capability and toward whoever builds the best shared clock for human-AI teams.
