TSMC
What founders, operators, and investors are saying about TSMC, tracked by Signal Headquarters. Every line below is attributed to a named speaker.
Analog in-memory compute achieves 150 TOPS/W at 8-bit precision in 16nm, vs ~5 TOPS/W for best digital matrix-multiply in the same node, a 30x efficiency advantage.
“We're basically doing 8bit compute at 150 tops per watt in a 16 nanometer technology. So just as a point of reference the best digital matrix multiplies will give you sort of like five tops per watt in that technology. is 30x better at the level of that core technology.”
AI chip startups cannot use early TSMC process access as a moat because Nvidia already knows new processes better than any small entrant can.
“I promise you that Jensen saw that process when it was a twinkle in Taiwan Simmy's eyes and it they know more about it than this little company with 200 people can imagine.”Gavin Baker · 20 May 2026
Gavin Baker on Nvidia's unconstrained GPU demand potential
“If Taiwan Semi did what Jensen wanted, I think Nvidia could sell two trillion dollars of GPUs in 26 in 26 or 27, maybe two.5 trillion, maybe three trillion.”Gavin Baker · 20 May 2026
TSMC is projected to spend $100 billion on capital expenditure in 2028.
“3 years from now TSMC is going to spend a hundred billion dollars on CapEx.”Dylan Patel · 23 Apr 2026
Low-end Android phone makers like Xiaomi are being forced to drop consumer devices because chip supply is being consumed by data centers and TSMC pricing is prohibitive, AI buildout is cannibalizing the consumer electronics market.
“A lot of the consumer devices low-end especially are getting dropped because they don't have access to the chips. the chips are all getting pulled into data center and it's just way too expensive for like Xiaomi or these lower-end Android phones to go and like manufacture at TSMC now.”
Gavin Baker on Nvidia-TSMC handshake business relationship
“I do think it's wild that Jensen has never had a contract with Taiwan Semi. They do business on what seems fair in handshakes.”Gavin Baker · 20 May 2026
TSMC faces essentially inelastic demand for chips, it could double prices and still sell full production capacity.
“They could double the prices and probably sell all their chips anyway.”Zvi Mowshowitz · 19 Mar 2026
